School Attendance Matters

Posted on

Absenteeism:

Absenteeism refers to the excused or unexcused absences of students from school.  Absences due to vacation, suspensions, illness, and global pandemic all lead to lost time in the classroom.

Prioritize Attendance:

Data shows that missing 10% or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year in early elementary can make it harder to learn to read.

Arrive On Time:

Arriving late means the student is missing class time, often the same part of the daily rouotine.  Many classrooms start their morning with reading or math.  A consistently late student will stgruggle to keep caught up with the rest of the class.

Prediction ..

By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of the three signs that a student may drop out of high school.  By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor or graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

Attendance Matters!

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school – and themselves.

Start building this habit early so students learn that going to school on time, every day is important.  Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and beyond.

Land Acknowledgment

Rocky View Schools would like to acknowledge the land and recognize all the Indigenous Peoples whose footprints have marked these lands from time immemorial. Together, we can learn and honour the Ways of Knowing of Indigenous Peoples for all future generations.
